Harare Ward 10 Councilor Empowers Community
City of Harare Ward 10 Councilor Hammy Madzingira has embarked on a drive that seeks to capacitate youths through self -help projects.
In an interview with ZimReview, Cllr Madzingira whose jurisdiction covers Sunningdale and the Graniteside industrial area said the project is meant to assist young people.
“Having noticed the social ills in our community where young people are unemployed with some involved in substance and drug abuse, we felt that these lads needed something that will have them occupied. We embarked on projects such as sewing, welding, carpentry and cake baking and I am happy the uptake has been great.
“With the help of lecturers from council Vocational Training Centres (VTC) we have managed to train more than 217 individuals and I am happy that some of the students have been giving lectures to some who are registering with us,” said Madzingira
He said the courses will continue as they want to curb massive drug abuse in the community by engaging with addicts.
“We have various courses that suits both females and males, though all courses are open to all we have seen many females taking up the baking course. We want these males to come and register with us, we have the equipment for the courses. We want them to have welding, carpentry and catering courses,” he said.
Recently, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume presided over the graduation of the first group of students who successfully completed their trainings in various courses.
