High Court Grants Bail to Three Pro-Democracy Campaigners

By Staff Reporter

The High Court has granted bail to three pro-democracy campaigners, Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, and Samuel Gwenzi, following their arrest on charges of disorderly conduct.

The trio were dragged out from a plane at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while on their way to Victoria Falls to attend a conference last month.

The trio, were released under strict conditions.

The court set the bail at the equivalent of US$150 in Zimbabwean dollars (ZiG), a sum that the defendants have been required to deposit.

As part of their bail conditions, Kwekweza, Chere, and Gwenzi must report to their nearest police station on the last Friday of each month. Additionally, they have been ordered not to interfere with any state witnesses involved in their case and to continue residing at their registered residential addresses until their trial concludes.

The three campaigners were represented by lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

Their arrest has sparked widespread criticism from human rights organizations, who argue that the charges against them are politically motivated and an attempt to silence opposition voices.
