A cash-in-transit vehicle carrying gold from How Mine to Bulawayo was this morning attacked by armed robbers who went away with 11,9 kg of gold worth US$650 000.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) the security company contracted to ferry the gold was attacked by thirteen criminals who were using three vehicles.
“The ZRP is investigating an armed robbery case which occurred at the 21km peg along Bulawayo-How Mine Road on 04/10/2022 at around 0730 hours. A security company which was conducting a cash in transit involving gold from How Mine was attacked by thirteen criminals who were using three cars, a Nissan NP300 registration number HR30XJGP, Toyota Hilux GD6, and a Nissan March. The suspects disarmed the security guards and stole four firearms (two 303 rifles and two pistols) and 11,9kgs of gold. More information will be released as investigations unfold,” read a ZRP statement
According to eye witnesses a shootout between a mine official and the robbers ensued with the unidentified official managing to shoot one of the vehicle which they then dumped while firing at the official.
The same official is said to have pursued the other two vehicles (Toyota GD6 and Nissan March) until Ekusileni Hospital (Hillside) towards the Bulawayo city centre, where the armed robbers managed to escape.
The incident comes at a time the country is grappling with rising cases of armed robberies where individuals and corporate have lost their valuables.
