Namibia’s Electoral Commission Denies Awarding Ballot Paper Contract to Chivayo

Contrary to social media reports that Zimbabwe businessman Wicknel Chivayo had been awarded the contract to supply the Commission of Namibia (ECN) for the production of ballot papers for the country’s upcoming presidential and National Assembly elections the Commission has denied the claim.

In a press statement, the ECN dismissed the accusations as “malicious and baseless,” asserting that they are intended to discredit the Commission and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

“The Electoral Commission of Namibia unequivocally refutes the malicious and baseless allegations,” said ECN CEO Peter Shaama.

He said the claims, which emerged following the announcement of the contract award on October 17, are false and designed to “cast a shadow on the integrity of Namibia’s electoral system.

The ECN clarified that the contract for the production of ballot papers was awarded to South Africa-based company Ren-Form CC, following a rigorous and transparent procurement process.

According to the statement, the total cost of the contract amounts to N$6,259,686, significantly lower than the inflated figure of N$1 billion circulating in certain media outlets.

“Ren-Form CC is a South African company, not a Zimbabwean company, and has a solid track record,” Shaama said, countering claims about the firm’s origins and expertise.

The ECN also reiterated that its procurement process adheres strictly to Namibia’s legal frameworks, including the Public Procurement Act.

“The authority to make procurement decisions lies solely with the Commission,” Shaama added, stressing that no external influence was involved.

As Namibia prepares for its November 2024 elections, the ECN urged citizens to remain vigilant against misinformation.

“We call on all citizens to support the Commission in protecting the integrity of our democracy,” he said.
