Workshop Highlights Media Bias and Sensationalism in Coverage of Vulnerable Groups

In a recent workshop in Harare, organized by the National Association of Freelance Journalists (NAFJ), members of the LGBTI community joined journalists and tertiary students to share their struggles with media sensationalism and bias.
In a country where homosexuality prohibited, community feels misrepresented, with narratives rarely reflecting their lived experiences.
The workshop served as a vital platform for candid discussion and collaboration, aiming to build a foundation of respect and understanding between journalists and the communities they report on.
Participants highlighted the frequent challenges they face in achieving accurate media coverage and stressed the need for journalists to engage with their stories thoughtfully, with sensitivity to appropriate terminology and framing.
“This workshop has opened my eyes to significant gaps in how we report on LGBTI issues. Understanding the language and experiences of the community is essential for accurate representation. A reporting guide will be invaluable as we navigate these sensitive topics,” said one participant
