Tragedy Strikes Twice: Fatal Road Accidents Claim Lives on Country’s Highways

Two separate fatal road accidents have left the country in mourning as the nation grapples with yet another grim reminder of the perils of unsafe driving practices.

The incidents, confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), have resulted in a total of fourteen fatalities and numerous injuries.

According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, the first tragedy unfolded on March 15, 2024, at approximately 3:00 PM along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which five people were killed when a Homan Sino truck with two passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Aqua vehicle with four passengers on board at the 191-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 15/03/24 at around 1500 hours. The bodies of the victims were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for post mortem,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi

While the nation grappled with the shock of the first incident, tragedy struck again less than twenty-four hours later, another fatal collision shook the country, this time along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road at the 267-kilometre peg.

“Meanwhile, in another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 16/03/24 at around 0100 hours at the 267-kilometre peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, nine people were killed whilst 39 others were injured when a Blue Circle bus and City bus were involved in a head on collision. The bodies of the victims were taken to Beitbridge District General Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
