Man (67) Arrested In Connection With Murewa Violence

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a 67 year old man in connection with violence that rocked Bhunu Village (Ward 4) Murewa.

Seven elderly people suspected to be member of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) were harassed and beaten by suspected Zanu PF youths.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had arrested Never Chimutashu in connection with the incident and will appear in court in due course.

“Reference is made to the ZRP Twitter message dated 7th January 2023 on the alleged Murewa North political violence incident. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of one of the suspects, Never Chimutashu (67), who is expected to appear in court in due course. The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still conducting Investigations, with a view of accounting for other suspects in this case,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi

Following the incident which has been condemned from all quarters of society Zanu PF Mashonaland East chairperson, Daniel Garwe distanced the party from the incident.

“The Province hereby distances itself from the individuals in the viral video. They are neither members of ZANU PF Mashonaland East Province nor any known affiliate and were clearly hired to further nefarious agendas including soiling the image of His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Second Republic.

“These individuals are not identified anywhere in the video by word or clothing as members of our peace-loving Party. It is therefore presumptuous, hasty and even sinister, to rush to brand them as ZANU PF members given that we are in an election season often fraught with all sorts of chicanery.” Garwe said
